Delores “Lori” Markiel, born 26 May 1944, passed from this Earth on 6 November 2025 after a long struggle with brain atrophy. She passed peacefully having expressed her deep love for her husband and children.

Lori was born in Sandpoint, Idaho and passed while residing in St. Louis, Missouri.

She is survived by her husband John Markiel, married 61 years together, her children Dr. J.N. “Nikki” Markiel and Dr. J. Andrew Markiel, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Lori was an avid knitter all her life, always with knitting needles in hand to make sweaters for family and friends, hats for children born prematurely and for cancer patients, and passed on that love of crafting with yarn to countless others over the years. She enjoyed to garden, to read, and to travel. In the latter years of her life, she and John traveled the United States, collecting countless memories preserved in pictures and stories.

She was a dynamic person who engaged in countless acts of service throughout her life. She learned and later taught sign language, helped countless elderly neighbors in every town she lived in, and volunteered for multiple projects and initiatives in many communities over the decades of her life, from voting roles to education to public libraries.

A family wake will be held in the future to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks people to consider a donation to their favorite cause or charity. Make a difference to the world
in her memory.
