Judith Ann (Barrett) Spasovich
January 16, 1937 – March 18, 2025
Judith Ann (Barrett) Spasovich, beloved wife of Ray and mother of Dan and Tanya, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025 after heart complications from pneumonia.
In her 88 years here with us she lived a long life, full of wonderful and varied experiences.
She was born on January 16, 1937 to Esther (Dyroff) and Frank Barrett in the small town of Dupo, IL where she grew up on the family farm and lived most of her life. She graduated from Dupo High School class of 1954. Judith went on to graduate from Washington University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and then worked as a commercial artist at Ray Advertising until getting married in 1967 and starting a family.
She loved nature, animals, and being outdoors. She was an avid gardener, winning regional awards and interviewed by Better Homes & Gardens for a potential feature. In addition, she was quite the activist for historic preservation, saving the environment, and neighborhood improvement. She helped form the McKinley Fox Neighborhood Association when she lived in South St. Louis. After moving back to Dupo to take care
of her ill parents, she co-founded Project DUPO to try to revitalize her beloved hometown. She also served on the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission.
While dating her husband, a Serbian immigrant, she immersed herself in the culture which is steeped in tradition and history. She converted to the Orthodox religion, learned the language, customs, and folk dances, and taught Sunday school.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Ray Spasovich; her son, Dan (Adelphi Margarita) Spasovich; her daughter, Tanya (Mark) Lewandowski; her grandson,
Cole Lewandowski; and sister, Karen Crawford.
