Laura Beal
Nov 7, 1968 – Aug 15, 2026
Laura Beal, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2026, surrounded by her family and pets in the comfort of her own home. She was born on November 7, 1968, to Jeanne Szarwinski (née Pontello) and the late Alex Szarwinski.
Laura was a loving aunt, cousin, niece, and friend to many. Growing up, she was surrounded by her large Italian and Irish families. In addition to sharing a strong bond with her mother, she had an especially close relationship with her Noni, Nellie Pontello (née Bernardon).
Laura graduated from Parkway North High School in 1987, where she made many lifelong friends. After graduating from the nursing program at St. Louis Community College–Meramec, she made an oath to God that she would always give her full effort to caring for her patients—a promise she faithfully kept throughout her career.
Upon her retirement, Laura devoted all of her time to her family. She took the greatest pride in their accomplishments and milestones, especially seeing her daughter, Annie, receive two degrees from Saint Louis University; her stepson, Mitchel, become a father to Lennon; her stepson, Matthew, marry the love of his life, Melissa, and become a loving stepfather to her daughter, Dreya; and her mother, Jeanne, receive multiple awards from the Missouri Writers Guild for her writing.
Laura was an avid collector with a keen eye for discovering treasures at thrift shops. Her home was always impeccably clean and beautifully decorated with the many finds she cherished.
Laura was a lifelong learner, a quality she instilled in her daughter. Her interests were varied, including classical music and literature, art, psychology, gemology, and theology. She also had a wide-ranging taste in entertainment. In addition to watching Masterpiece Theatre on PBS and movies on Turner Classic Movies, she enjoyed a good laugh from comedies such as SNL and Sanford & Son.
Laura loved all animals (except spiders) and had a knack for remembering people’s pets’ names before their owners’ names. She spent many hours watching wildlife in her backyard and feeding the neighborhood animals. She was especially fond of her Chihuahuas, whom she spoiled beyond measure.
Laura’s faith in her Savior was strengthened and solidified during the Anointing of the Sick, performed by Father Joseph Ikegbunam at Mercy St. Louis.
She was preceded in death by her father; grandparents; infant daughter, Jenny; beloved dog, Chi-Chi; and best friend, Brian Koon.
Laura’s cremation will be handled under the care of Michel Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Laura’s honor to the Jefferson County Pet Food Pantry.

Dearest Jeannie,
I am so sorry for your loss. Whenever I think of you, I always think of Laura too. You were such a devoted mother and there was nothing you would not have done for her and your granddaughter, Annie. You loved Laura wholeheartedly and without judgement. The greatest gifts you can give to your child. You, Laura and Annie will be in my thoughts and prayers. Lizzy and I are donating $100.00 to the pet food pantry in Laura’s honor.
Much Love,
Lizzy and Patty
I just found out about Laura’s passing a few days ago. I’m very, very sorry & sad to hear that.
I first met Laura in high school (Mr. Stivers class). She would sometimes get in trouble for bringing animals into class. One time she brought a box of baby rabbits, (lol) but it wasn’t until we both attended Maramec college that we became good friends. We had a lot of fun times…When I went off to college at SMU she would write me letters & would talk on the phone.
When I got home after graduating college, Laura and I hung out a lot and had a bunch of fun times.
About a year ago I was able to contact Laura after many years & we spent hours talking on the phone reliving memories, laughing & talking about our lives, etc. I was planning a trip to Hillsboro to meet up with her but now it’s too late 🙁
I hope everyone is doing ok and wish you all the best!! Once again I’m VERY sorry & VERY sad.
