Bob Toretta passed away at home on April 7, 2024. He was 79 years old.
Bob was the epitome of a grumpy old man, even before he was an old man, but his gruff exterior hid a soft heart. He lived on Pattison Avenue on The Hill as a child, joined the Air Force at age 17, and traveled abroad while serving his country. He later served as a police officer, and he finished his working life as a security guard at Missouri Botanical Garden (or as he simply called it, the Garden). Bob appreciated nature—he enjoyed the beauty of the Garden, kayaking, and fishing. He loved to learn, loved his dogs, and preferred to read non-fiction. His favorite book was Thor Heyerdahl’s Kon-Tiki.
Bob leaves behind his sister, Brenda Lynch; his son, Bob (Shaiylah) Toretta; his stepsons, Ronald Toretta and Timothy (Lisa) Burke; and his grandchildren, Bryttani, Chelsea, Nycholas, Coralynn, Shone, Kymberli, Nicholas, Emma, Xander, Penelope, and Amelia.
Bob was preceded in death by his partner of more than 30 years, Marie Burke; his parents, Robert M. Toretta and Bernice Hollman (nee Colombo); and his grandchildren, Ronnie Toretta and Samantha Burke.
Contributions to The Salvation Army or Smile Train in Bob’s memory are appreciated.
